Government to Ensure Free Access to Open Waterbodies for Genuine Fishers

The government is committed to ensuring unrestricted fishing rights for genuine fishers across all open waterbodies to safeguard the livelihoods of the fishing community, particularly in the haor regions, said State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock, Sultan Salauddin Tuku.
The State Minister made the remarks while responding to reporters at the Netrokona Circuit House today.
The current government is dedicated to establishing the fair rights of genuine fishermen, the State Minister said, Guided by the policy ‘Jal Jaar, Jola Taar’ (He who owns the net, owns the waterbody), we have secured free access to open waterbodies so that fishers can earn a living without hindrance, thereby strengthening the sustainable management of the country’s fisheries resources.
Addressing the long-standing challenges posed by the leasing system, the State Minister noted that influential locals had previously occupied haors and waterbodies through leases, preventing ordinary citizens from accessing them. The government has taken initiatives to eliminate these obstacles so that ordinary people and fishers can harvest fish and maintain their livelihoods seamlessly, he added.
Highlighting infrastructure development, the State Minister recalled the canal-digging program once initiated by the late President Ziaur Rahman. Following that legacy, he said, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has already launched various programs to excavate rivers and canals, maintain the navigability of waterbodies, and ensure proper management. Under this initiative, numerous canals and rivers across the country are currently being re-excavated.
He further emphasized that the government has implemented effective measures to maintain river navigability, alleviate public suffering caused by waterlogging, and make waterbodies more suitable for fish farming.
