British Council\u2019s WOW Bangladesh-backed art installation explores the convergence of art, biology, and technology
Dhaka : Embryonic Shifts (Rupantor), a ground-breaking multidisciplinary art and science project, was unveiled on 22 August 2026 at SHALA Neighbourhood Art Space, Aloki, running until 29 August 2026 (1:00 PM to 9:00 PM daily, free for all).
Supported by the British Council through the WOW (Women of the World) Bangladesh 2026 programme, the project brings together STE(A)M to explore perception, identity, and the intricate spectrum of diversity across nature. Stemming from a practice studying the persistence of vision, the installation bridges fine arts with technical engineering using a dynamic fusion of flickering light, motion, mechanics, and probability. At its centre is a large-scale zoetrope\u2014a rotating mechanical sculpture creating illusion through light and motion.
Through community engagement with Korail youths, deep research, and meticulous craftsmanship, the project translates cellular processes and embryonic development into visual art stories. Stripping away dry academic jargon, it makes evidence-based science accessible and wondrous, challenging preconceptions and fostering empathy.
On this occasion, Maarya Rehman, the Deputy Director of British Council Bangladesh, remarked, \u201cEmbryonic Shifts is a compelling example of how art, science and technology can challenge perceptions and open up new ways of seeing the world. Its exploration of identity and diversity reflects the values at the heart of Women of the World, creating spaces where different voices, perspectives and experiences can be seen, heard and valued. Through WOW Bangladesh 2026, the British Council is proud to support artists and creative practitioners who are pushing boundaries, creating opportunities for women, girls, and young people to participate and lead, and bringing new perspectives to the future of their communities. This exhibition shows how interdisciplinary collaboration can make knowledge more accessible, spark curiosity and create more inclusive opportunities for creativity and innovation.\u201d
The project is driven by interdisciplinary artist and animator Saiq\u2019a Shabnam Chowdhury, who shapes its narrative and visual design, and Fab Academy alumnus Samiul Hoque, who oversees its mechanics and physical fabrication. The creators thanked MACHAAN, PARAA, and SHALA Neighbourhood Art Space for their vital support.
