During a pool party, a young boy accidentally wandered into the deep end of the pool and began to drown. Red Cross-trained lifeguard Malik Osman knew he had to act fast.
Malik pulled the boy from the water, directed someone to call 911, and immediately began CPR. He continued providing care until the boy started coughing and regained consciousness.
“When I saw him struggle, my Red Cross training just took over,” Malik said. “It wasn’t until the paramedics arrived and the boy was safe that the reality of what had just occurred hit me.”
First responders commended Malik for his quick thinking and calm response during the emergency. His actions ultimately saved the boy’s life.
At their annual gala, the American Red Cross Northern California Coastal Region honored Malik with our Lifesaving Award for Professional Responders. His family attended the ceremony and proudly celebrated his achievement.
Malik is no stranger to helping others. After a devastating earthquake struck Syria, he ran a marathon to raise funds for those affected. He also volunteered near the Turkey-Syria border, helping organize a youth soccer camp. While Malik does not consider himself a hero, he believes he simply had the right training and responded when it mattered most.
“I was just in the right place at the right time, with the right preparation,” Malik said. “And that preparation exists because of the work the Red Cross does every day to educate and empower people in our communities. I’m so grateful I had that knowledge when it counted.”
