Did you know? One of the biggest reasons people hesitate to evacuate during a wildfire is concern for their pets. That’s why the co-located pet shelter at Pathfinder Park Event Center in Florence, Colo., has become such an important part of the Aspen Acres Fire response.Located just steps from the American Red Cross shelter, the pet shelter — operated by the Community Animal Response Team and local volunteers — allows evacuees to stay close to their pets. Owners can visit throughout the day to feed them, walk dogs, clean kennels and spend time together while knowing they’re safe and well cared for.“Our goal is to remove one more reason someone might hesitate to evacuate,” said Thea Wasche, American Red Cross regional pet lead. “When people know their pets are safe and nearby, they can focus on protecting themselves and their families.”Coal Creek resident Kat Rods wasn’t sure she would leave.“My animals are my life,” she said. Now she visits her Chihuahua, Layla, and cat, Sweet Pea, several times a day.Joe Pendergrass, who evacuated with five dogs and three cats, agrees.“I can definitely vouch for the animal shelter … they’re doing a terrific job.”Preparing for wildfire means preparing for every member of your household — including your pets. When safe shelter is available for both people and animals, it’s one less reason to delay evacuation when every minute counts.
