Ardie Gipson never expected her usually healthy son, Amos, to land in the hospital. But when he was suddenly hospitalized with a serious illness, a blood transfusion became a critical part of the care that helped him recover.
Amid the uncertainty, Ardie found an unexpected connection: one of the nurses caring for her son was someone she had hired years earlier as a recruiter for the Red Cross Blood Services team.
“She said, ‘Ardie? You probably don’t remember me, but you hired me seven years ago as an apheresis therapeutic nurse with the Red Cross,'” Ardie said. “She went on to share that although she now works at the hospital, she still volunteers with the Red Cross whenever she can.”
After sharing a hug, the nurse told Ardie something she didn’t expect — the blood products used to help her son came from the Red Cross.
“In that moment, I broke down in tears,” Ardie said. “The gravity of it all hit me, understanding that what I do every day matters. Even though I’m not on the front lines, my work helps connect people to a mission that saves lives. That day, it saved my son’s.”
You may never know all the lives your work touches, but moments like Ardie’s are a reminder that what you do can be a force for good when it matters most.
