When women can participate in politics safely and equally, our entire democracy wins.
Yet, during the 13th National Election, we saw how female candidates were sidelined and continued to face harassment and electoral violence, which hindered their meaningful political participation. To help build safer and more inclusive local elections, a set of recommendations was presented to the Honourable Election Commissioner of the Bangladesh Election Commission, Md. Anwarul Islam Sarker by our Country Director, Farah Kabir on 7 July.
The recommendations include:
📝 Strengthening the Local Government Election Code of Conduct with gender-responsive measures to ensure women’s equal political participation, safety, and protection from electoral violence, harassment and discrimination.
📝 Establishing effective complaint mechanisms and enhancing security for women candidates.
📝 Reducing financial barriers that continue to limit women’s meaningful participation in politics.
Let’s build a future where every voice has a safe space to lead
